To protect oneself from the Evil eye - jealousy, envy, curse, disease or jinx, accidents and misfortunes - for thousands of years people have used different methods. One of the most common is to carry or wear as jewelry the Hamsa amulet. The Hamsa is shaped like a hand with five fingers and can be used with the fingers facing up or down, depending on the local custom. In some cultures the Hamsa, otherwise known as Chamsa, Khamsa, Hand of Fatima, or Hand of Miriam, is portrayed with an eye in the middle of it.
